Goodbye Chatroulette - goes dark

Chatroulette, the site that let you meet strangers in a sort of game of Russian roulette (you never knew what you were going to get) has been taken down. The site went dark yesterday, promising to relaunch tomorrow (which should mean, today) in a new version.

All the site says is:

“Announcement: The experiment #1 is over for now. Thanks for participating – Redesigned and updated version of the website will be launched tomorrow.”

The site quickly became popular after its launch, but also quickly became the target of folks like South Park and Jon Stewart. It also became less popular as the tendency toward randomly reaching men pleasuring themselves became known.

Chatroulette was created by Andrey Ternovskiy, 17, a Moscow high school student. He said that he wrote the first version of Chatroulette in "two days and two nights". Ternovskiy chose the name Chatroulette after watching The Deer Hunter, a 1978 Vietname War film in which POWs are forced to play Russian roulette.

The service launched in November, 2009. According to Compete.com, it had grown to about 1.8 million users by March 2010, but then traffic began dropping. It has shown some growth of late.

In addition to the site going dark, TechCrunch has added (but has not confirmed) "that Napster founder Shawn Fanning has broken ties with the company and is no longer advising founder Andrey Ternovskiy."

Short in Swedish: Sidan Chatroulette har slocknat. Man vet inte om den kommer upp igen - dock sägs det från Chattroulettes håll att den ska komma upp i ny version idag. Den som lever får se :-)
